Insurance broker Willis Group Holdings has begun an internal investigation into its discovery of about $28 million in fraudulent overstatements of commissions and fees between 2005 and 2011 in its employee benefits operations.
The companys financial control processes discovered the overstatements, but management was not made aware of the issues until after it announced its annual earnings Feb. 14, according a report it made to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on the discovery.
The filing indicates that certain unidentified employees were placed on leave pending the results of the internal investigation.
“The associates in question, who have been placed on administrative leave pending completion of the investigation, have not been members of Willis executive management or played a significant role in internal control over financial reporting,” according to Willis filing. “Ba
